Concrete seawalls mostly fail from the inside out. By the time the damage is obvious on the face, the mechanism has usually been running for years.
Reinforced concrete in a marine environment has a predictable adversary: chloride reaching the reinforcement. Once steel begins corroding it expands, and that expansion is what breaks the concrete around it. Almost everything visible on the face of an aging concrete seawall is downstream of that process.

- Is spalling on a concrete seawall serious?
- It depends on whether reinforcement has lost section. Shallow surface spalling with intact reinforcement is a surface problem. Spalling with exposed, corroded reinforcement across multiple panels is structural, because patching the face does not restore steel that has corroded away.
- Can a cracked concrete seawall be patched?
- Sometimes, but patching addresses appearance rather than mechanism. If the crack exists because the panel is carrying load it cannot handle, or because the anchoring behind it has failed, the patch will re-crack. Establish why the crack formed before deciding how to close it.
- What is the white staining on my seawall?
- Most likely efflorescence — mineral deposits left behind as water moves through the concrete and evaporates at the surface. It is not structural damage in itself, but it confirms that water is passing through the wall.
